Fidelity

Iniziamo questa giornata (mondiale della poesia) regalandovi due poesie di Grace Paley, scrittrice e poetessa americana scomparsa nel 2007, intellettuale militante, pacifista e femminista, che credeva nel valore laico della testimonianza. I suoi ultimi versi, vale a dire le poesie degli ultimi anni, sono stati raccolti nel prezioso volume «Fedeltà», curato e tradotto da Paolo Cognetti e Livia Brambilla.

Anti-Love Poem

Sometimes you don’t want to love the person
you love you turn your face away from that face
whose eyes lips might make you give up anger
forget insult steal sadness of not wanting
to love turn away then turn away at breakfast
in the evening don’t lift your eyes from the paper
to see that face in all its seriousness a
sweetness of concentration he holds his book
in his hand the hardknuckled winter wood-scarred
fingers turn away that’s all you can
do old as you are to save yourself from love

Poesia contro l’amore

A volte non vorresti amare la persona che ami
e distogli la faccia da quella faccia
i cui occhi labbra potrebbero placare ogni rancore
cancellare l’insulto rubarti la tristezza di non voler
amare voltati allora voltati a colazione
di sera non alzare gli occhi dal giornale
per vedere quella faccia in tutta la sua serietà una
concentrata dolcezza lui tiene il suo libro
tra le mani le dita nodose intagliate
dall’inverno voltati è tutto quello che puoi
fare alla tua età per salvarti dall’amore

Fathers

Fathers are
more fathering
these days they have
accomplished this by
being more mothering

what luck for them that
women’s lib happened then
the dream of new fathering
began to shine in the eyes
of free women and was
irresistible

on the New York subways
and the mass transits
of other cities one may
see fatherings of many colors
with their round babies on
their laps this may also
happen in the countryside

these scenes were brand new
exciting for an old woman who
had watched the old fathers
gathering once again in
familiar army camps and comfortable
war rooms to consider
the necessary eradication of
the new fathering fathers
(who are their sons) as well
as the women and children who
will surely be in the way

Padri

I padri sono
più paterni
ai giorni nostri ci
sono riusciti
diventando più materni

che gran fortuna per loro l’avvento
del movimento femminista da allora
il sogno di una nuova paternità
ha cominciato a brillare negli occhi
delle donne libere ed è stato
irresistibile

sulle metropolitane di New York
e i mezzi pubblici
di altre città si vedono
paternità di molti colori
con bimbi rotondi sulle
ginocchia può
succedere anche in campagna

queste scene sono state un’eccitante
novità per una vecchia signora che
aveva osservato i padri dei suoi tempi
riuniti ancora una volta nei
loro soliti accampamenti militari e confortevoli
gabinetti di guerra per studiare
la necessaria estirpazione dei
nuovi padri paterni
(che sono i loro figli) così come
delle donne e dei bambini che
senz’altro si ritroveranno fra i piedi
