Camus, Taccuini
I. In Cielo
fino allora assopita, risveglia l’amara memoria
Sarebbe interessante scoprire come.
V. Arte e vita divorate dai followers

Against the harmonic mentality
Satan, Camus and the mythologies of right and left
By Edoardo Rialti
To preserve in violence its character of rupture, of crime – that is, not to admit it if not linked to personal responsibility. Otherwise, it is by order, it is in order – either the law or metaphysics. It is no longer a rupture. It evades contradiction. It paradoxically constitutes a leap into comfort. They have made violence comfortable.
Camus, Notebooks
I. In Heaven
As he is flying to corrupt Adam and Eve in Eden, Milton’s Satan is caught in a moment of fatigue and uncertainty. The full weight of rebellion and condemnation falls upon him again, and he falters torn by longing for the universe of light from which he tore himself in his revolt.
…horrour and doubt distract
His troubled thoughts, and from the bottom stir
The Hell within him; for within him Hell
He brings, and round about him, nor from Hell
One step, no more than from himself, can fly
By change of place: Now conscience wakes despair,
That slumbered; wakes the bitter memory
Of what he was, what is, and what must be
Worse; of worse deeds worse sufferings must ensue.
From this crack he recovers by embracing his fate for the umpteenth time, accepting the barred road behind him and calling evil good. It is even a canonical moment in the trajectory of all heroes, the dark night, the Mount of Olives for Christ or Joan of Arc’s retract , the moment of fragility and solitude in which one doubts the destiny of extraordinary election and then performs the last decisive act. It would be so easy, so restful to fall back into the embrace of a common path, instead of rowing in the opposite direction and spoiling the harmony with one’s own dissonant note. But this is the decisive question. Whether or not Milton belonged to the devil’s party, as Blake or the Romantics wrote, the poetic intuition of grafting this psychological notation onto the trajectory of the outcast par excellence (whose perennial fascination is present in the pars destruens of all revolutions, from Spartacus to Guevara, and can easily become sclerotized in the self-serving description of a cheap Prometheanism), shows an inner dynamic in bold letters: in this perspective God and Satan are two realities existing in each and every one, the glory of a perfectly hierarchical system of values where there is a place for everything and everything is in its place, illuminated by the reassuring light of a vertical, unchallengeable authority, and the painful, even tragic but necessary drive to detach and challenge all this in the name of one’s own particular vision. Even a scientific perspective such as that of evolution, in this sense, gives reason to the biblical account of original sin. Progress from the innocent fusion with everything is both a victory and a wound, and we react to that original trauma in various ways, almost always trying to reconstruct a lost universe, new hypotheses of meaning in which to order life and ourselves. A truth that, as Dante writes at the end of Paradise with a marvelous image of a medieval bookbinder, allows us to grasp the detached sheets of the universe as a single volume.
This is because the harmonic mentality and the dissonant mentality are always within us, and the latter remains painstakingly necessary to escape the perennial enchantment of the former, every time we transform the homes of our partial and conditioned identities into new churches. The word harmony in us almost in itself evokes something positive, but we must remember that all genuine harmonies are always temporary, from those of an orchestra or a concert to a scientific discovery or a political victory. Protracting or extending them always implies violence on other aspects of life and its contradictory nature. One does not need to believe in God to live religiously, with rituals, glorious connections, sacred books, revealed truths, witchcraft trials and condemnations of heretics.
II. On Earth
It is an obvious fact. The year 2020-21 has been and still is the two-year period of Camus’ The Plague (and of the one narrated and analyzed by Manzoni in pages of a strength and lucidity too little remarked, but this is a different matter). The mixture of natural circumstances and human obtuseness, the prevarication of the authorities and then the forced closures, the frantic search for a horizon of meaning in which to inscribe the event and one’s reactions, the progressive dulling whereby everyone thinks about the same things at the same time, and the cowardice and the exhausted heroism and the desire to try to hold on to love and friendship and then, when the plague is perhaps over, the immediate rush of the masses to forget everything, to remove the disturbance and the questions raised by death. All this we know too well. Yet, in the global community made possible by social media and the polarization in it of increasingly vertiolic debates were the public speeches of Camus from ’37 to ’58 (Conferences and speeches, Bompiani) that as far as I am concerned have been a foothold to which I keep coming back when it comes to issues such as cancel culture, patriarchy, freedom of expression, differences between right and left, which have been revived in these days by the debate around Walter Siti’s new book, Contro l’impegno (Against commitment), a text that I will not deal with directly in this article but which I consider important and necessary for the issue it raises. It is frankly impressive how Camus’ reflections are not less topical than his more famous novel concerning the crisis we are facing, its roots and implications, and like it they sound a note that constitutes a healthy antidote against the respective self-representative mythologies of right and left. They are the passionate testimony of a deeply committed and sided intellectual who has always tried to see things clearly, and not to stop doing so even when this challenges his own convictions, and for this reason he has been accused in his time of disengaged aestheticism or of objectively favoring reaction. All this on the part of those who at the time believed themselves to be the advocate of the last wave of revolutionary progressivism and in the name of this came to justify Stalin’s Russia.
III. The West is burning and The human stain
Right-wing culture is constantly traversed by a passive-aggressive conspiracy. In the Western world alone, governments of the extreme right or center-right far outnumber those of the left[,] yet conservative politicians, intellectuals and sympathizers – of religious ideology or not – continually declare that they are a minority in the catacombs, which the ideological tyranny of the left would no longer allow to express themselves in any way. In waves and with different, easily overlapping names, a new post-human colonialism would threaten the family, sexual difference, culture, the fetish of tradition. Aggressive feminism, multiculturalism, ecologism, gender, cancel culture, would be different faces of a single prism and a single design of the elites of the new globalist order (perhaps secretly followers of the Devil) for which the West burns. It is the cry launched by Denethor, the Steward of Gondor who would only like “everything to be as it was in the past” before setting himself on fire like “a barbarian king of the past”. A ritual suicide that in some ways embraces the latest choice of so many conservative intellectuals, large and small in stature, from Mishima to Drieu de la Rochelle to Dominique Venner, who shot himself – significantly – in Notre-Dame Cathedral in 2013. The reasons for this persecutory framework are many and well investigated by Wu Ming 1’s The Q of Qomplotto: here I will limit myself to pointing out the obvious, namely that almost no one likes to admit to being the Empire of Star Wars, everyone wants to feel like the Resistance, the Carbonari, the rest of Israel, the faithful of the Apocalypse persecuted by the Beast. This lends dignity and additional weight to their beliefs, makes them a cause with the aura of martyrdom, simultaneously mythologizes themselves and the adversary. Despite dominating de facto much of the chessboard, the right accuses the left of holding a de jure power that allows it to hunt down and gag any alternative vision of society, economy, culture. Disparate episodes are connected to others and distorted, the statues of slavers paired with who can be taught at university or the issue of bathrooms for trans people. However, the simple range of suicides mentioned above should be enough not to dismiss this accusation simply as the last desperate refuge of an ideological vision that invents a titanic opponent to cloak its own defeats and incapacity in glory.
Many right-wing intellectuals have pointed to risks in the technological society that the left has uncritically ridden. But there is more. In fact, if the right-wing mentality tends to defend already existing harmonic systems, the left-wing one, due to the devouring Manichaeism that lurks in human psychology, easily erects new ones and transforms the houses of social and identity battles into as many new churches. It stands to impart lessons from a preceptual podium resting on the assumption not of being right, but of being righteous. Certainly they praise thinkers of an opposite ideological matrix who, however, have almost always been digested by now in the collective admiration: Céline, Mishima precisely, Tate, Bernanos. And when those reacting on freedom of expression are not banal provocateurs like Milos Yiannopoulos or famous misanthropes like Ellis and Houellebecq (of an entirely different magnitude) but civilly committed writers like Salman Rushdie, Tom Stoppard, Margaret Atwood, J. K. Rowling, debasing their warnings and distinctions by making them privileged middle-aged people who have become conservatives in their super-attics is not at all different from the debasement campaigns to which Orwell, Pasternak, Pasolini were subjected in the past. As Azar Nafisi, who really escaped from a theocracy, wrote, writers are the canary in the mines of humanity, the first to point out when there is a lack of oxygen for everyone.
Above all, as Pasolini himself noted, the new consumerist civilization, which does not tolerate the existence of slices of purchasers that it cannot reach with specific proposals, espouses and often contributes to the triumph of civil battles, transforming them into logos, and at the same time bleeds them dry with a cascade of easy and edifying products, which in turn, however, condition the demand itself.
One always demands only what one already subscribes to and appreciates, one reacts with ferocious fury to everything that contradicts it. As Irene Graziosi, recently remembered by Loredana Lipperini, wrote: It is bizarre how the term activism has lost the component of activity inherent in the word itself. Just post a black square or some elaborate infographics on a rainbow background and you immediately become an activist for a cause. Or rather, of various causes, because intersectionality – an academic framework useful for analyzing the intersections of different social and identity dimensions by applying them to large numbers – finds fertile ground on social media for embracing any existing cause with infographics. For the climate, against catcalling, against homotransphobia, against the use of offensive words, against racism, against the fetishization of bodies, for body positivity, against plastic. Thanks to the intersectionality applied to individuals, it is possible to calculate the percentage of disability that each of us carries with us, 60% water, 40% discriminated category, and to be activists for any cause that is dissected down to the last atom in order to produce more posts, feed the algorithm and, incidentally, gain followers. Activism, once collective, has become the prerogative of individuals, emptying of meaning the -ist that describes it. Every struggle is declined on the self, everyone understands it in their own way, and no one is able not to personalize the ideal to which he claims to believe. The testimonial becomes a martyr.
As the right wing mythologizes the left wing, so in turn fascists, neocons and even reformists with different views become irredeemable Orcs, as in Ejzenstejn’s Alexander Nevskij where the medieval Teutonic Knights (i.e. the German invaders of 1939) are all hidden under helmets with a thin cross visor, while the very human face of every Russian can be glimpsed. A contrast that will be taken up by Lucas of Star Wars for his Stormtroopers. And in the social activism where posting a hashtag is already a medal for civic value, a filthy anti-Semitic tweet, a joke in bad taste and a complex pamphlet become in turn the very same thing.
The fact that the two mythologies support and nourish each other is already recounted in the 1990s in Philip Roth’s The Human Stain, where an esteemed teacher is kicked out for using a word with a possible racist meaning about two absentee students (whom he had never seen) only to discover that he was not a white Jew but an African-American who had had an operation to conceal his identity and assume another one. The introjected racism and the racism falsely hunted by the reformist neo-puritanism, the internal and external cancel culture constitute here a single tight tangle on the lights and shadows of human nature. And it is precisely to better fix this spiral that we can turn to Camus’ lectures.
IV. Eyes on the Right
These are interviews, contributions to round tables, inaugurations of houses of culture, greetings in support of the Spanish struggle against Franco, thanks for awards such as the Nobel Prize itself. And in spite of so many changes in the context, it is striking how all the poles of the political debate of these years are contained and enucleated. Starting with the dominance of technology and its ability to completely alter our relationships: The universe of technology is not in itself negative, and I am absolutely opposed to all forms of thought that call for a return to the spinning wheel or the hand plow. But the technical reason placed at the center of the universe, considered the most important engine of a civilization, ends up causing a kind of degeneration, both in the minds and in the conduct of people, which risks leading to the defeat we have talked about. It would be interesting to find out how. We are doing so, in a painfully empirical way.
Just to clear the field from possible misunderstandings, Camus is deeply aware of the bloody and monotonous rituals of totalitarian religion that always finds in right-wing populism its armed arm, yesterday as today, and that we see triumphing in xenophobic, capitalist and machist parties fed by a climate of qualunquist aggressiveness. All this must be fought, and that’s it, in the streets and with the rifle, if necessary. This word, sovereignty, has long put a rod in the wheels of all international history, he writes, and the words he devotes to the right-wing governments of the immediate postwar period are perfectly fitting for devastating administrations like those of Trump, Johnson, Salvini, Orban or Bolsonaro: It is the aristocracy of a gang, the sovereignty of crime, the cruel lordship of mediocrity. As far as I am concerned, I only know two kinds of aristocracy, that of intelligence and that of work… Never in the world have such petty gods reigned. Seeing them on the front pages of newspapers or on cinema screens, it is not surprising that their churches are primarily police. Add to this the hypocrisies of liberal or mildly reformist governments that, like the blatantly reactionary ones, are capable of flaunting as their own the great humanitarian battles and citing Don Milani and Gramsci, emptying them of all effectiveness and effective value: until the day comes when a handful of military and industrialists can say “we” when talking about Molière and Voltaire or print, distorting them, the works of the poet previously shot. That day, which is the one in which we are, should inspire us at least a thought of compassion for poor Hitler. Instead of killing himself for excess of romanticism, it would have been enough for him to imitate his friend Franco and have a little patience. Today he would be Unesco’s delegate for education in Upper Niger, while Mussolini would help raise the cultural level of the Ethiopian children whose fathers he slaughtered not long ago. Then, in a finally reconciled Europe, we would witness the ultimate triumph of culture, at an immense banquet of generals and marshals served by a troop of democratic but resolutely realistic ministers.
When the oppressed categories manifest their sufferings and even protest harshly, here are the columnists disgusted by the crudeness of the right to open a barrage of “if, but, however”: But these slanders, after all, like the verbal cautions that we see deployed even in France by our men of progress, tell us something that we already knew. They tell us that the reactionaries, today, are also on the left. Convincingly internationalist, even at the dawn of the European Community Camus had no illusions about its reduction to a revered puppet in the shadow of which to carry out an oppressive bureaucraticism: Europe has always been great only in the tension it has been able to introduce between its peoples, its values and its doctrines. Europe is nothing but this balance and this tension. Every time it has renounced it, and has wanted to impose through violence the abstract unity of a doctrine, it has become bloodless, it has become this exhausted mother that gives birth only to miserly and malevolent creatures. And perhaps it is right that such creatures end up pouncing on each other to finally find an impossible peace in a desperate death.
In this tired satiety, in which the old relationship with the world of peasant societies (with their violent limits but also their wisdom) has been abandoned in favor of a world of pure technological and productive efficiency without the forces of nature and friendship, the main disease of Western societies is already announced. The left is not exempt from this illness, and among its many symptoms it also includes the ferocity of the trial reserved for anything that contrasts with its own vision of the world, constantly projected as universal truth, a sort of abstract partiality in stark contrast to the authentic capacity for dedication to something or someone:
Having thus reached the height of meaninglessness, we can at least denounce the deception of this century, which pretends to pursue the domain of reason when what it seeks are only the reasons to love that it has lost. And our writers know it well, who all end up invoking that poor, derelict substitute for love which is morality.
V. Art and life devoured by followers
No, idolatry is not culture, for Camus. He already saw that paradoxically bigotry, egoism and racism on the one hand and progressive moralism on the other are two converging ways of mutilating and ignoring reality: Right-wing academicism ignores a misery that left-wing academicism exploits. But, in both cases, misery is reinforced while art is denied. Many of the positions taken with respect to Siti’s pamphlet also reconfirm this, so that civil commitment necessarily seems to have to become a banal simplification and the call to the “immoral” truth of art a mere qualunquist elitism: We will thus have a production of entertainers or purists of form, which in both cases will give rise to an art separated from living reality. And decades before the birth of social media, Camus reveals the quantum leap of a world where power and success no longer even coincide with material wealth but with their translation into visibility and influence: For about a century we have been living in a society that is not even the society of money (money or gold can arouse visceral passions), but that of abstract symbols of money. The mercantile society can be defined as one in which things disappear in favor of signs.
As the Wu Ming Collective wrote, recalled by Loredana Lipperini as well, the question is not whether the network produces liberation or subjugation: it always produces, and from the beginning, both. It is its dialectic, one aspect is always together with the other. Because the network is the form that capitalism takes today, and capitalism is always contradiction in process. Capitalism asserted itself by freeing subjectivities (from feudal bonds, from ancient servitudes) and at the same time imposing new subjugations (to the disciplined time of the factory, to the production of surplus value). In capitalism everything works like this: consumption emancipates and enslaves, it generates liberation that is also new subjection, and the cycle starts again at a higher level”. Facebook, therefore, is based on the users’ surplus labor: “Every day Zuckerberg sells your surplus labor, i.e. he sells your life (sensitive data, patterns of your surfing, etc.) and your relationships, and earns several million dollars a day. Because he owns the means of production, you don’t. Information is a commodity. Knowledge is a commodity. Indeed, in post-Fordism or whatever the hell we want to call it, it is the commodity of commodities. It is productive force and commodity at the same time, just like labor-power. The community that uses Facebook produces information (about tastes, consumption patterns, market trends) that the owner packages in the form of statistics and sells to third parties and/or uses to customize advertising, offers and transactions of various kinds.
The representation and sharing of one’s life, from existential reflections to material details, thus becomes for Camus the first fundamental commodity, with which you preach, teach, are approved. The sharing of one’s breakfast, of fifteen seconds of a piece of music in progress, a civil appeal merge into an inextricable flow: Millions of men will thus have the feeling of knowing this or that great artist of our time because they have learned from the newspapers that he raises canaries or that his marriages do not last more than six months. The height of celebrity today consists in being admired or detested without being read. Any artist who, in our time, claims to be famous must know that it is not he who will be famous, but someone else in his name who will end up getting out of hand and perhaps, one day, killing the true artist in him.
In this cascade everything gains the same (un)weight, from the essay to the rant, and the so easily Manichean nature of our imagination only exacerbates. Anything that counters it must be swept away, and the lurid insults of a homophobe or a racist or the dialectical contortions of some pro-reactionary pen-pusher become identical to the line in a movie, a character in a book, or the questions in an essay. And whether one starts from reactionary or reformist convictions, any testimony more complex than mere prior deployment is in turn trivialized to be rejected or digested without too much trouble.
VI The implacable doctrines and judge-penitents of the Left
With respect to the conniving intellectuals and advocates of fascist violence, Camus would have called the same violent tendency on the left: that of the “penitent judges.” In Michel Onfray’s synthesis, Camus thus foresees with some accuracy the civilization in which we have begun to live in the half-century since his death: an age of self-hatred, guilt, and generalized mea culpa, the time of penitent judges, who, though atheists, moralize using Christian categories. The century of the death of God and the end of the Catholic religion has all too often had to resort to Christian devices to think for itself. And to prevent itself from acting: confessions, admissions, contrition, guilt, repentances, penances, expiations, repentances, reparations and absolutions contaminate and fester in this world of pure immanence… the judge-penitent begins by rejoicing in a loud and public mea culpa; he proclaims on his knees his own faults, extending them to the whole West; then, after confessing his sins as a white man, a Christian, a Westerner, a colonizer and an exploiter, he considers himself sufficiently pure to force the others to confess their sins as well; if confession is delayed, he immediately resorts to violence against the recalcitrants.
And it is here that the challenge arises for the intellectual and the artist who believes in progressive battles but does not want to turn them into a new revealed doctrine. The adoration of one’s own side (and today its branding) of those who believe only in progress – as Camus wrote in a famous reply to Sartre’s paper accusing him of aestheticism and complicity with the right – allows one to cut short and despise, while other approaches, including his own, make it a duty to understand and presuppose a constant effort on oneself. Hence the prestige enjoyed by the former among some intellectuals, friends of the law of minimum effort. Intelligence devoid of character is, in the end, much worse than serene imbecility. Lacking a firm will, it equips itself with an implacable doctrine, and that is how we have seen the birth of that species so typical of our times: the inflexible intellectual ready to justify any terror in the name of realism alone. It is a hypocrisy that the right, yesterday and today, declines by minimizing its own violence (the country’s problems are always others…) while the left denies the mere existence of problems for the resolution of which the right has equally dangerous answers, if not more so.
VII. God comes back through the window
As Nietzsche, who was a fundamental model for Camus, noted, the real fundamental discriminator is whether we are Platonic or not, that is, whether we believe that being precedes existence. We can be secular and progressive as much as we want, but if at the end of the day we believe that there is a good “in itself” to which our daily life must conform and approach in stages, and not that right and wrong are empirical categories that require their constant and always partial construction and reconstruction, then, at the end of the day, we will always be preceptors and censors who, in the name of a superior and absolute category (which may be social justice, feminism, the rights of oppressed minorities, ecologism) judge personal and collective life with a sociological optimism that constitutes only the umpteenth counterfeit of the old religious messianism. On the contrary, in an atheistic and evolutionary perspective, the categories of good and evil are like the laws of physics: they are not true in absolute, but they become more and more fitting as we approach certain objects or environments, such as gravity. And one of the main faults of leftist intellectuals is precisely this Platonism, which Camus also smelled in Soviet realist art and its Western supporters: showing things not as they are, but as they should be.
In all of this, in the face of the crossfire of reactionary obtuseness and left-wing fanaticism- taken for granted that fascism is fought with weapons in fist- what is the specific vocation of writing and thinking? Creating today means creating at one’s own risk. Every publication is an act and that act exposes one to the passions of a century that forgives nothing. The problem, therefore, is not knowing how damaging this is to art. The problem, for all those who cannot live without art and what it means, is only knowing how, among the gendarmes of so many ideologies (so many churches, so much solitude!), the strange freedom of creation is still possible.
Platonism always translates into an Ethical and Religious State, confessional or not, that rewrites the past and rapes the present on the Procrustean bed of its own convictions, and this infects life, writing and critical reflection that are colored by a patina of activism: Europe will not heal if we do not deny political philosophies the right to solve everything. For it is not a matter of giving this world a political or moral catechism. The great evil of our age is precisely that politics claims to provide us with a catechism, a complete philosophy and even, at times, an art of loving. But the role of politics is to make things work, not to solve our inner problems. I ignore, for the life of me, whether there is an absolute. But I do know that it is not political. The absolute is not an issue that concerns everyone: it concerns each of us individually. And it is necessary to set up reciprocal relations so that each of us has the inner ease of questioning the absolute for himself. Our life can also belong to others, and it is right to give it when necessary. But our death belongs only to us. And this is my definition of freedom.
The other exists
The litmus test of a gaze authentically engaged with life and its impacts lies precisely in the artist’s ability not to flatten the world to what he would like it to be, not to erase the objections and questions raised by what is different from him. It is here that for Camus we can really discover if we are authentic revolutionaries, capable of challenging the tyrannical tendencies inside and outside of us: For what the conqueror of the right or left seeks is not unity, which is above all the harmony of opposites, but totality, which is the suppression of differences. The artist distinguishes where the conqueror levels. The artist who lives and creates in the flesh and in passion knows that nothing is simple and that the other exists. The conqueror wants the other not to exist, his is a world of masters and slaves, like the one we live in. The world of the artist is one of living contestation and understanding. I do not know of a single great work that has been built exclusively on hate, while we know well the empires of hate. In an age in which the conqueror, by the very logic of his attitude, becomes executioner and gendarme, the artist is forced to be a deserter.
One of the most frequent objections is that this would be a comfortable aesthetic position, by radical-chic, who would take refuge in a kind of thirdness so refined and rich in nuances, but that it really costs nothing and keeps away from the barricades. For Camus this instead makes life all about barricades, because the artist strives never to look away even from the overpowering lurking in his most intense convictions: For this reason it is useless and ridiculous to ask for justification and commitment. We are committed anyway, albeit unintentionally. And finally, it is not the struggle that makes us artists; if anything, it is art that forces us to be in struggle. By his very role, the artist is the witness of freedom, and it is a justification that he sometimes pays dearly for. By his very role, he is lowered into the most inextricable depths of history, where he suffocates the very flesh of man. We are immersed in this world, whether we want to be or not, and we are by nature enemies of the abstract idols that triumph in it today, be they national or party-based.
The pain of the other
Great art is larger than all our battles, however just and necessary, because, while it sustains us to fight for them, to burn with fury, indignation and even hatred at times, it also asks us to embrace the evidence that there are no monsters or demons in the world, only antagonists, secretly tormented by our broken dreams of love and understanding: True artists never have great success in politics, for they are not able to accept lightly, I know well, the death of the opponent! They stand on the side of life, not death. They are the witnesses of the flesh, not of the law. By vocation they are condemned to understand even that which is their enemy. This in no way means that they are unable to judge good and evil. But, even in the worst criminal, the ability they have to live the lives of others allows them to recognize the constant justification of men that is pain.
Even in the worst criminal. Let’s ask ourselves. Really? It’s so easy to say that today of the Spanish inquisitor, the Bonapartist monarchist, the Bourbon prince, the refined Nazi officer, the gangster during Prohibition. Can we repeat that phrase when it comes to the pedophile, the Trumpian denier, the homophobic leghist, the religious fanatic, the neo-fascist? Personally, there are doctrines and attitudes at the mere thought of which I would like their representatives to be crushed, torn to pieces, humiliated. How to hold on to this anger and translate it into action, without ceasing that in the background there is also that uncomfortable truth, is a question I try to ask myself every day. Where to find a model? For Camus, once again, it was necessary to go back to Greece, to that beach in Asia Minor where the murderer of a son and the father of the one who had killed the great love of that same murderer weep together.
If my knowledge does not deceive me, in the Hellenic civilization the measure has always been the acknowledgement of the contradiction and the decision to remain there, in the contradiction, whatever happens. Such an approach is not only an admirable rational and humanist approach. It actually presupposes an act of heroism.
